Doe Run Company Water Treatment Program

Design and Construction of five plants with varying capacities to handle mine water currently discharging into local streams.  The Environmental Protection Agency issued a consent order to Doe Run, a lead mining and processing company located in southeastern Missouri.  Alberici was hired to design and construct facilities to meet the EPA Consent Order discharge limits in the time frame specified.  The plants consisted of a ballasted flocculation process using the CoMag system. The ballasted flocculation process will utilize a combination of chemical treatment (sulfuric acid, ferric chloride, sodium hydroxide, metal precipitant, and polymer) with the addition of magnetite as a ballast to remove heavy metals and other contaminates from the mining wastewater and tailings pond water.  Sites were completed in a sequential order reducing owner’s overall cash flow still meeting the EPA Consent Order for Discharge Limits and Time for Completion.

• Provided a process to clean mine water to meet EPA Consent order discharge permit.
• Design and construction of five wastewater treatment plants for The Doe Run Company at mines throughout southeast Missouri.
• The five treatment plants range in capacity from 27 MLD to 98 MLD and handle mine water currently discharging into local streams.
• The new facilities use the CoMag System, a ballasted flocculation process that employs a combination of chemical treatment with the addition of mineral magnetite. This allows for removal of heavy metals and other contaminates from the mining wastewater and tailings pond water.
• Sites were completed in a sequential order to reduce the owner’s overall cash flow, while still meeting the EPA Consent Order for Discharge Limits and Time for Completion.
