The City of Edgerton, Kansas, faced the challenge of expanding its sewage treatment system to support the new Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) Intermodal Facility and the adjacent Logistics Park Kansas City (LPKC), a 1,000-acre industrial complex. Meanwhile, neighboring City of Gardner, Kansas, also required improved wastewater treatment capacity to serve its growing community. Both cities needed an efficient and cost-effective solution to meet their distinct wastewater needs while minimizing financial risks tied to the development timeline.

Challenge met
Through a unique intermunicipal agreement, Edgerton and Gardner partnered to address their shared wastewater treatment needs. Through a collaborative design-build delivery, CAS Constructors delivered the new facility: Big Bull Creek Wastewater Treatment Facility. The facility includes a 500,000-gallon-per-day treatment plant that utilizes energy-efficient processes to meet stringent Kansas water quality standards. Wastewater treatment features include debris screening, biological nutrient removal, phosphorus filtration, and ultraviolet disinfection.
The collection system supporting the plant comprises three lift stations, two force mains, two gravity interceptors, and a 42-inch pipe crossing underneath a major interstate. This system ensures reliable wastewater conveyance and treatment for both communities.
With the completion of the Big Bull Creek Wastewater Treatment Facility, the City of Edgerton met its commitments to the BNSF Intermodal Facility and LPKC, while the City of Gardner gained the wastewater reliability to serve its community. The project was completed on time and paved the way for future residential, commercial, and industrial growth in the region.
