The challenge

The City of Wichita faced a critical challenge with its 80-year-old water treatment plant, which was no longer equipped to support the needs of a rapidly growing population. The outdated facility lacked essential redundancies, compromising both reliability and efficiency. With increasing demands and stricter water quality standards on the horizon, the city needed a solution that would ensure a sustainable, resilient water treatment system for the future. Recognizing the urgency, the City of Wichita engaged a design-built team, including CAS Constructors, to deliver a modern facility capable of meeting the city’s current and future needs.

Key Facts

Plant serves 500,000 residents

20,000+ SF of finished building space

Over 1 million labor hours

Challenge met

The team developed a flexible water treatment plant that could handle water from three different sources: wellfield water, surface water, and water from the city’s ASR Surface Water Treatment Plant. This adaptability not only enhanced the plant’s efficiency but also strengthened its ability to withstand drought conditions. To ensure continuous service, the facility was equipped with a tornado-resistant backup generator, guaranteeing water delivery even in extreme weather events.

Through the design-build delivery process, the team was able to deliver early cost certainty, saving the city $14 million. The team also introduced innovative design elements, such as a dual-media filtration system that reduced the required filter footprint by 20 percent, verified through a successful pilot project.

With a focus on innovation and collaboration, CAS Constructors delivered a modern, reliable water treatment plant that will serve the City of Wichita for many years, ensuring a safe and dependable water supply for its residents.
